Picture a 17-year-old girl from a humble household in the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro - no connection with Judaism or Israel - deciding to pack up, board a plane for the first time in her life, and move to another continent where she knew no one. This girl had no idea where it would lead her. This is the story of Yasmim Francheschi, who recently earned her International B.A. in Liberal Arts from Tel Aviv University. After the amazing opportunity Yasmim received from the Brazil Scholarship Fund (BSF), a scholarship that supports Brazilian students to study Undergraduate and Graduate Degrees at Tel Aviv University, she can now call herself an alumna of TAU.

Over 15 Brazilian students, just like Yasmim, were granted the BSF over the past 6 years. These students have graduated from various international programs at Tel Aviv University including the
B.A. in Liberal Arts, the B.Sc. in Electric and Electronic Engineering, the M.A. in Security and Diplomacy, and the L.L.M. in International Law programs.

Both Djamilia de Oliveira and Naomi Sutton, who also studied in the International B.A. in Liberal Arts, were named to the Dean’s list as outstanding students of the class of 2019. Gabriel Domingues, a student of the B.Sc. in Electrical and Electronics Engineering also made it to the Dean's list in 2021, after achieving an incredible 98.6 GPA. Luana Perin, student of the International L.L.M., received a job proposal from Pearl Cohen, an award winning Israeli law firm. Felipe Minhoni, student of the M.A.in Security and Diplomacy, has appeared on various podcasts and in leading newspapers from Brazil to speak about his perspectives on the recent Gaza crisis.

So what is the formula behind the Brazil Scholarship Fund which is making it possible not only for these incredible Brazilian students to realize their dreams of studying abroad, but also to excel in their academic endeavors and find amazing professional opportunities? The answer is a combination of the candidates' acceptance to a program at Tel Aviv University, followed by a two-step scholarship application process: filling in a form where they must state achievements from extra class activities, and two interviews with members of the Brazilian Friends of TAU Association (BFA). The BFA members are themselves alumni from international universities and successful in their careers. Candidates must show clear intention of returning to Brazil after their program of choice, as they are expected to give back to Brazilian society with all the knowledge they have gained during their studies in Israel. Intention to make Aliyah will disqualify candidates for the Brazil Scholarship Fund.

This academic year (2021/22), six new BSF recipients will be beginning their programs at TAU International - the most ever in one year - with 2 students accepted to TAU International’s new and exciting Dual Degree program with Columbia University.

As the years pass, and the number of Brazilian recipients of the BSF awards increases exponentially, the expectation is for many more inspirational success stories. We look forward to sharing these stories with you, dear Alumni.
